The Best Fishing in Guanacaste

Whether you stay in the lush Papagayo, the sands and waves of Flamingo, or the bustling beach town of Tamarindo, Guanacaste has a unique atmosphere for everyone. This is evident when it comes to fishing as well.

Unlike other popular fishing destinations, the North Pacific is more of a moored boat location due to the lack of marinas.

This also has its perks. The benefit of moored boats in this area is price. Since charters in this region do not have to pay the high price to be in a marina, charter costs here tend to be 10-15% less than in other locations.

Also, unlike the other popular fishing destinations to the South, Guanacaste offers amazing white sand beaches and it has a huge variety in hotels and lodging.

Whether you are looking for large all-inclusive resorts or beachfront locations, Guanacaste has options available.

Experience the Fishing Vacation of a Lifetime

Best Time to Fish in Guanacaste

The North Pacific is also the driest region of Costa Rica. This means that during the rainier months of August – October, when the Central and South Pacific see more showers, Guanacaste is a much better destination due to its drier climate.

For fishing, the peak season here ranges from mid June – October. During these months, the Sailfish become more common along with blue Marlin, Tuna and Dorado (Mahi Mahi).

May and November are transitional months in Costa Rica and fishing can be great in any region.

Offshore vs Inshore Fishing

Guanacaste is a good departure point for anglers who want to experience both the deep sea and the shallower waters near the coast.

It all depends on the species you want to catch and the time of year you are planning to travel.

For example, from December through April, the North Pacific region of Guanacaste is plagued by strong trade winds that make for not so pleasant offshore fishing conditions.

The inshore fishing is great this time of year as well as others, but we don’t recommend offshore fishing during this windy time of the year.

The rest of the year there is nothing much to worry about except catching the next fish!

Choosing a Charter in Flamingo, Tamarindo, or Papagayo

The North Pacific is a large area with a variety of experiences to offer. Whether you want luxurious resorts, boutique stays, contact with nature, or a bustling atmosphere, Guanacaste has something to complement your fishing trip.

Three of the best fishing destinations are Flamingo, Tamarindo and Papagayo.

Papagayo is where most of the luxury is. With big brand resorts and high-end facilities, the area of Papagayo Peninsula provides expansive views of the bay and world-class service.

Guanacaste is also home to some great party beach towns. Places like Tamarindo and Coco are local hot spots that offer great eateries, nightlife, world-class fishing, and an authentic Costa Rica beach vibe.

Sometimes all you need is to relax and sit by a gorgeous white-sand beach. Flamingo is then the place for you. The area has great waves for surfing and a series of family-oriented hotels that can make for a great stay for travelers of all ages.

There are also many opportunities for adventure activities in this area, as well as some of the best national parks in the country. This means the whole family or group gets to see more of Costa Rica’s vibrant culture, day-to-day life, and nature.

If you are looking for a great family-friendly destination that has a large variety of hotels to choose from, with easy access to excellent fishing during the summer, great adventure tours, and pristine beaches, give the Guanacaste area a try.
