The Best Rooster Fishing in Costa Rica

The target and prize of the most serious inshore fisherman, the roosterfish is one of Costa Rica’s most sought-after species.

Popular for its fighting ability as its photogenic beauty, once hooked, this brazen and macho fish will try–and actually might be able–to out muscle you.

While the average roosterfish is about 20-40 lbs, roosters over 50 lbs are common and a good catch. A few monsters over 80 lbs are typically landed every year as well.

The trademark comb-like dorsal fin is its most unique trait, while the two dark blue bands along its sides add to its style points.

Part of the drum family, it also has a sloping forehead and a very strong, bone-like jaw. The roosterfish is most definitely a predatory species, feeding on a smaller reef and juvenile fish that it chomps up with a tight bite.

How to Catch It

There are many ways to catch a Trophy Rooster Fish, but one, in particular, seems to always produce.

Bump trolling a live bait around the reefs and outer islands is the single best way to catch monster roosterfish. lookdowns, rainbow runners, or mullet fish are particularly good for this, so keep some at hand.

Roosters can also be hooked with poppers, spinners, and jigs. Some anglers are even targeting roosterfish with the fly rod.

Whether you are a seasoned angler or have just started practicing, roosterfish is one of those fish you want to get off your bucket list.

With the right crew and ship your chances increase, so let us help you with any advice and services you may need.

Where to Target Roosterfish

To wrestle roosterfish head to the Pacific Ocean.

From Southern California to the coast of Ecuador, they are an inshore species, so they are rarely found at a depth greater than 200 ft.

In Costa Rica, they are most commonly found near the rocky islands, reefs, and pinnacles off the coast, but they can also be taken surf casting.

Roosterfish Season in Costa Rica

Roosterfish are caught all year round in Costa Rica, so they don’t really have a season.

They are caught from southern to northern Costa Rica throughout the entire year, so as long as you have live bait you are off to a good start.

Typically the slowest months are September and October, although during the peak season between January and April you might catch 7 roosterfish in just a half day of work!

If this exotic species is part of your ideal vacation in Costa Rica, make sure to get the best ship and crew with our professional advice and local knowledge.
