Welcome to Quepos, the fishing capital of Costa Rica!

This town has grown exponentially in the last couple of decades. It has a historical background, as it is the original port of entry on the Pacific coast. Its several piers and a new marina make fishing a prime activity.

Arriving in Quepos is quite easy. If you go by car it’s better to take the scenic view. It might take a couple of hours, but you get to see Costa Rica’s outstanding nature and geography along the way.

If you want to save some time, there are domestic flights going from San José to Quepos.

Experience the Fishing Vacation of a Lifetime

Thrilling Sportfishing in Quepos

When fishing is your priority it doesn’t get better than Quepos.

The new Pez Vela Marina is the starting point for all things water. Charter fishing, Catamaran sails, and water adventures call this marina home.

In fact, those staying in Manuel Antonio who want to fish are advised to travel to Quepos. Just 10 minutes away, you have the newest and most desired marina in the country. Here it is possible to enjoy inshore, offshore, FADs/Seamounts and fly fishing.

Deep sea fishing adventures are around the corner and the species plentiful. Head out early in the morning to catch Sailfish and blue, black, and striped Marlin offshore. Or head inshore and target Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Mackerel, and other reef species.

The Savegre and Naranjo rivers offer excellent inshore fishing, unique to this area. Get ahold of Machaca, Mojarra, Roncadores and record-breaking Snook while testing your abilities.

Best Time to Fish in Quepos

One of the advantages of fishing in Costa Rica is that all year there is something to catch. It all depends on the type of fishing you want to do and the species you’d like to pursue.

During the months of December to May, the bite is all about Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna and Dorado offshore. Inshore here is great year-round as well because these species don’t migrate.

These are the days when boats see double-digit Sailfish releases. Enjoy the many world-class tournaments which are held from January to April, like the Pescadora Billfish Championship, a women-only fishing tournament. You can expect flat, calm seas, great weather, and incredible offshore fishing.

From June to August this area gets a grab bag of species. This is the time of year when Tuna traditionally show up, and with them, the Marlin arrive in numbers. There are Sailfish still around, as well as plenty of Dorado for dinner.

This time of year is also great for inshore fishing. With the rains on land, species flock to the river mouths as bait is washed out to sea.

During these months, the action usually shifts offshore to focus on the famed Seamounts and FADs. This new fishery is taking the world by storm and is by far the best fishing experience for Marlin activity.

With extraordinary Marlin numbers, these overnight fishing adventures are one of a kind. For those adrenaline seekers who want to test their skills, this is a trip like no other.
